Back when I worked in a music store, my coworkers would sometimes bring back little samples from trade shows. One such product was this Hollywoodwinds Cork Saver Gel.

I’ve been using it for over a year now. While I can’t definitively say it’s better than any regular cork grease, I can’t say it’s worse either.

What the Heck Is This Hollywoodwinds Cork Saver?

Aside from being a lubricant, the Cork Saver claims to “quickly penetrate” the cork and protect it for the long-term. It also comes in a nifty glass container with a brush — you could almost mistake it for nail polish!

From what I’ve found, this cork saver has two major benefits:

  • Quick Penetrating: It does seem to be the case that it’s quick penetrating. After applying it, cork does seem to absorb it faster than regular cork grease.
  • Clean Hands: Since it’s quick penetrating and you’re using a brush, there’s no need to rub it into the cork with your fingers. That means you won’t need to wash your hands after using it, and you’re less likely to get gunk into the tone holes of your instrument.

That said, the jar is relatively big compared to other cork greases. If you have a small case, it might take up more real estate than desired.

Should You Get the Cork Saver?

Like I mentioned at the start, I can’t definitively say that this Hollywoodwinds cork gel is any more effective than regular cork grease. But if you’re looking to try something different, and if having cleaner hands is that much more worth it to you, then give it a try.
